Reflection

For a period of two months in Tijuana, Mexico, I had the privilege of assisting at my former gym, Núcleo. It all started when my former Karate teacher approached me with an incredible opportunity to coordinate and help with some classes. I was thrilled and eager to take on this challenge and make a positive impact in the lives of the youth in my community.

As a passionate advocate for mental health and wellness, my ultimate goal was to empower and improve the well-being of young people. With students ranging in age from 4-17 years old, I was determined to create a safe and welcoming environment where they could thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally.

To achieve this, I utilized a combination of individual and group tutoring, implementing physical activities, particularly yoga, and a variety of cognitive health-informed principles. I incorporated strengths-based approaches, youth engagement, and constant support and attention to my students.

Through my guidance and mentorship, my students began to develop a stronger sense of self-esteem, self-awareness, and confidence in themselves and their abilities. They learned to embrace and celebrate their unique qualities and differences, and they gained valuable skills in teamwork, communication, and leadership.

Overall, my experience at Núcleo was incredibly rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have made a positive impact in the lives of these young people. I firmly believe that with the right support and guidance, anyone can achieve their goals and reach their full potential.
