JAPANESE AFTER SCHOOL TUTOR
Through service learning, I was able to engage with my local community remotely through Community Partnership for Youth (CPY) after-school program. My service partners; Jada Williams. Asha Kimbrell, Paige Young, and I were assigned to serve 10 students whose ages ranged from 10-12 at Martin Luther King, Jr. School of the Arts (king.mpusd.net/).

Reflection
During each lesson, we have always connected Mexican, American, and Japanese culture through vocabulary, history, or traditions. During our last lesson, I can proudly say that my students have grown and self-esteem detailed through their smile's. One of the most common problems that I have noticed in my community service is that my students do not have the necessary resources to be successful in their education. (SL1 Part 1)They prove to be exceptionally gifted, but I am afraid that by having the dirty class all the time or not having access to programs that stimulate minority education or global competence, the percentage of helping them obtain an education through their development is very low. Another widespread problem is the representation of cultures and identities in schools. There are no programs that represent pride in being part of a race or festivities.( SL2 Part 2)
My next step is Teaching in Japan through JET as an ALT will expand my Japanese language proficiency and cultural knowledge. This would help me get one step closer to my career aspiration, an interpreter or translator for multicultural organizations such as Peace Corps or United Nations. After finishing my service with JET, I would like to apply to a university to obtain my master's degree and teaching credentials and obtain a doctorate
.
What I have learned through this class and my students in my community service is the support of Learning a language takes some time and effort, even for children who grow up with two cultures. During my community service, I have come to realize that the ability to my students in withholding information is quite advanced for their age. This is because they are all bilingual and have the ability to code-switch. When children learn more than one language at a time, their English test scores tend to be slightly lower for a time than they would be if they were "in" an English-only school environment. That is why it is necessary to give them the necessary resources and not harm them because they are not advanced in another language, since they are learning other languages.
